About Me
- Kaci Ballou-Mitchell
- This is going to be a great year! I believe in hands-on methods to help my students learn, and I try to utilize the many farms and other facilities available in this area to help put information to use. Many activities will be offered this semester, and a few of which will have required attendence. And don't worry - I have a fully agricultural background and am passionate about helping my students learn what I love. My husband and I own 400 head of cattle and are active in Team Roping and Barrel Racing Competitions. I am also a past (and sometimes present) free-lance writer for the Ozarks Farm and Neighbor and the FFA New Horizons magazine. What I don't know, I'll find out, so feel free to ask questions!

Ag Mechanics Students
All freshman agriculture students must participate in a group welding and construction project during the school year. This project, once completed, will be displayed at the Ozark Empire Fair and the Missouri State Fair. To be eligible for state awards, the project must meet certain criteria which are listed in the FFA Organizaitonal Handbook found in class. After reviewing that criteria, what ideas do you have for our class project? A trailer? A dog house? Patio furniture?
Post your ideas here, and once they have been looked over to find which ones fit within the Ag Department budget and available materials, we will vote. All voting will be held on the blog spot on November 1 - so get your ideas in!

The FFA Creed
It's that time of year when all freshman Ag students are asked to memorize the FFA Creed. Memorize you say? Yes - Memorize. It can be done, and has been done for several generations. Many students ask me what the best way to tackle this five-paragraph document is. Here are some basic tips:
1. Print out the .pdf printable version I have posted on the blog. This will allow you to mark on the document instead of using the one in the book.
2. Break the Creed into smaller peices, chunking it up in a way that you feel more comfortable.
3. If you don't understand it - research it! If there are parts of the Creed you simply do not understand, take the time to google it! Once you understand the language and to what historical or statiscal fact it is pertaining to, it is much easier to recite.
4. Don't be afraid to ask for help - if there is some portion of this that you feel unable to do, please let me know. I'll still make you do it, but I'll help.
Blog Question: What paragraph are you having the most trouble with? Would an in-class project or activity help?

Barnwarming Volunteers Needed!
Any parents interested in helping with the fall Barnwarming activities please contact Mrs. Mitchell at 417-581-3541. If I am unavailable, please leave a message with the school office and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Also, students may post for their parent on this blog, and give me contact information in class. Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas, including food, decorations, transportation, hay-ride supervision, awards, and fundraising.
Upcoming Greenhand Conference
All freshmen are required to attend the upcoming Area-9 Greenhand Conference. Official dress is to be worn, and any student in need of any elements of this official dress, please let me know so I can pull it out of storage and make sure it is clean. Please go over the FFA Organization Official Dress link at the bottom of the blog page to make sure you have all items discussed. Feel free to ask questions either on this blog or during the class period.
Ozarks Fall Farmfest
The Ozarks Fall Farmfest is held yearly at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds and is a way to bring farmers together to trade products and information. This year it was held October 1,2, and 3rd. Several breeds of cattle, horses, goat, sheep and hogs were displayed, along with any type of agricultural equipment you could dream of. We attended as a chapter and had a great time! All of my students were so helpful and ON TIME! I've never seen a turnout at Farmfest like we saw on Friday, but there were tons of useful boths for us to look through and lots of free goodies! Blog question for today:
What breed of cattle in the Livestock Annex did you like the best and why? Refer to the Livestock Handout link in the "Links" list to help identify and for further information. Only positive comments please!
